The CSISD Science Program Ensures:

  • CSISD science students will be able to independently use their learning to:

    • Become informed, critical users of science

    • Craft and communicate evidence-based observations, analysis, and conclusions.

    • Design and conduct investigations in order to generate reliable knowledge.

    • Analyze interactions within natural, designed, and interconnected systems.

  • CSISD Seventh Grade science students will conduct laboratory and field investigations for at least 40% of instructional time.

Unit Overviews

Unit 1:  Science Processes, Procedures, Safety, and Tools

  • TIMELINE: 5 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  Students conduct investigations using safety procedures while maintaining

environmentally appropriate and ethical practices. Students use scientific inquiry, critical

thinking, and a variety of tools to conduct investigations.

Unit 2:  Welcome to Earth

  • TIMELINE: 4 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  Earth is the only place in the Solar System with conditions known to support life.

    • Abiotic Factors:  Heat, light, water, atmosphere

    • Primary Succession: lichen breaking down rocks. Photosynthesis

Unit 3:  Life and Homeostasis

  • TIMELINE: 11 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  Living systems at all levels of organization demonstrate complementary nature of

structure and function. Living organisms respond to external and internal stimuli to

maintain balance.

  • Cells

  • Human Organ Systems

  • Homeostasis

Unit 4:  Heredity and Natural Selection

  • TIMELINE: 5 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  Populations and Species demonstrate variation and inherit the unique traits through a

gradual process. Instructions for traits are governed by genetic material.

  • Heredity

  • Variations and Adaptations

Unit 5:  Ecology

  • TIMELINE: 7 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  There is a relationship between organisms and the environment. Natural events and

human activity impact Earth systems.

  • Biodiversity: Texas Ecoregions, sustainability, secondary succession

  • Chemical Changes and Energy Flow

  • Catastrophic Events and Human Impacts

Unit 6: To the Moon

  • TIMELINE: 4 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  Review conditions on earth that support life. Extend these conditions to manned space

exploration.
