Algebra Pre-AP Year at a Glance

YEAR AT A GLANCE COURSE:  Algebra 1 Pre-AP

2018 - 2019 School Year

The CSISD Math Program Ensures:

  • CSISD math students will be able to independently use their learning to:

    • Communicate, analyze, and justify the reasonableness of mathematical ideas in diverse situations.

    • Persevere in solving mathematical problems.

    • Select appropriate tools and technology to solve everyday problems with precision.

    • Model mathematical relationships to understand and make decisions in daily life scenarios.

Unit Overviews

Unit 1:  Number and Algebraic Methods

  • TIMELINE: 5 weeks

  • SUMMARY:   In order for students to be successful for the entire year, students will need to start with a

broad review of middle school topics, as well as diving further into Algebra topics. This will include:

  • Simplify Expressions, and Solve Equations and Inequalities (3 weeks)

  • Exponents and Radicals (2 weeks)

Unit 2:  Relations and Functions

  • TIMELINE: 1 week

  • SUMMARY:   After reviewing the basics for solving and simplifying, students will transition into an

overview of all three types of functions they will study in depth throughout the year.

Unit 3:  Linear Functions

  • TIMELINE: 4 weeks

  • SUMMARY:   After a brief overview of all of the functions, students will start looking at all the functions

by going in depth with linear functions. Linear functions cover the most TEKS and must be covered first to help understand the other functions. This will include:

  • Basics of Graphing: y=mx+b (2 weeks)

  • Writing Equations: Basics and Special Cases (2 weeks)

Unit 4:  Linear Inequalities and Systems

  • TIMELINE: 6 weeks

  • SUMMARY:   This unit is a continuation of linear functions, as these topics cover quite a range of linear

functions. Students will continue growing on their knowledge of linear functions, while also adapting to new functions as well. This will include:

  • Scatterplots (1 week)

  • Inequalities (1 week)

  • Systems (2 weeks)

  • Piecewise Functions (2 weeks)

Unit 5:  Quadratic Functions

  • TIMELINE: 8 weeks

  • SUMMARY:   After diving into linear functions, students will be looking into quadratic functions. These

functions cover the next highest depth, and will be covered in depth appropriately. This will include:

  • Operations with Polynomials (3 weeks)

  • Solving Quadratics (2 weeks)

  • Graphing and Writing Quadratics (1 week)

  • Transformations (2 weeks)

Unit 6:  Exponential Functions

  • TIMELINE: 3.5 weeks

  • SUMMARY:   To finish up the year, students will dive into exponential functions. Exponential functions

are the last function to cover, and will wrap up the year before EOC prep. This will include:

  • Exponentials (1.5 week)

  • Regressions (1 week)

  • Sequences (1 week)

Unit 7:  Algebra Connections

  • TIMELINE: 2 weeks

  • SUMMARY:  After the EOC is given, there is still a small amount of class time remaining before the year

is over. These topics will be varied based on teacher choice, and only one of the following units will be used. This will include:

  • Radical Operations

  • Preview of Geometry

  • Project Based Activity
